2010: What's In Store for Graphic Designers

Several factors contribute to a bright future for graphic designers. More and more businesses are relying on computers throughout the world. Digital printing is overtaking much of the printing industry, requiring computer layout skills. And the highly competitive marketplace is pushing businesses to increase the professionalism of their advertising media, which means more work for graphic designers.

Not a Lot of Education Required
Most design firms prefer a graphic designer with experience over one with a lot of education. Building a great portfolio is the best way to land a good job. One way to gain experience is to work freelance for awhile; after a few years of experience, you can easily land jobs.

Among those with little or no professional experience, designers with a degree or certificate have an edge over those without. An associate’s degree will usually suffice, but a bachelor’s degree is even better.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), put out by the U.S. Department of Labor, indicates that as competition for graphic design jobs continues to rise, more education will be required in the future. This is another reason 2010 is a good year to already be in the profession.

Computer Jobs on the Rise
The U.S. Department of Labor projects that of the top ten areas of job growth, eight are in computer fields. So careers having to do with computers, including graphic design and desktop publishing, are ideal areas to pursue.

Growth in Demand for Corporate Design
As more and more companies seek to stand out from the competition, they need professional graphic designers to build their image. Even during the difficult year of 2009, the need for logo designers rose steadily. And currently, advertising gigs are the most profitable for graphic designers.

Graphic Design Growth
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, they expect a 27% job growth in the field of graphic design. . Unfortunately, the month of February 2010 has shown a drop in jobs available for creative directors and graphic designers, even freelancers. On the up side, though, logo design jobs have continued to increase despite this setback. Designers looking for a specialty may find logo design to be a great place in which to create their niche.

Desktop Publishing Growing Rapidly
Desktop publishing jobs have an even brighter future than graphic design with a projected 67% growth in the job market. Anyone in the graphic design field knows that the line is blurry between jobs requiring desktop publishing and graphic design skills. Graphic designers who acquire desktop publishing knowledge will have an even better chance of finding a good job.

For those already in the graphic design business, this year is looking to be a time for growth and success so long as you play it right. For those just beginning a career in graphic design, 2010 is the perfect year for starting strong. So don't let the wake of recession from 2009 scare you. Get on board and hold on tight. Your career will be accelerating to optimum speeds!
