Studying Symmetry in Nature for Better Designs

When we observe nature closely, we can begin to see the magnificent order of it. Each piece of nature holds a type of symmetry. Even when we do not focus our attention on symmetry, we depend on it. In fact, we notice the odd, off-balanced aspects of nature because they don't fit with our well-trained minds. Being aware of symmetry in design can help you to accomplish depth and fluidity that we could not otherwise reach.

Here are three basic types of symmetry. Try to use them in a project such as brochure printing to see what a difference they make.

Reflection Symmetry
This is the type of symmetry we probably think of most often. It is the way two halves work together to make sense. In nature, reflection symmetry is found in bilateral bodies. Split down the middle bodies are a perfect mirror image of their other half. In order for balance to happen, the two halves of a body must be equal. When you are designing a logo or an image for bi-fold brochure printing, reflection symmetry will cause your design to make sense. We humans like to be able to make sense of an image. Reflection symmetry fulfills that desire.

Translation Symmetry
This type of symmetry is a repeated pattern spaced evenly along a line. When you look for translation symmetry in nature, it is not as obvious. Think more along the line of genetics. An apple will produce an apple will produce an apple. A dog will produce a dog will produce a dog. This system allows for predictability and reliability. When you are designing with translation symmetry, you will convey a message of reliability. It can be used to show sameness as well. When you carry a design across folds when you are brochure printing, you demonstrate that the brochure as a whole is consistent.

Rotational Symmetry
A rotational symmetry can be turned 360 degrees without a change in the appearance. For instance, many plants show rotational symmetry. The simpler the design, the better this works. This is another type of symmetry that creates interest for the viewer. Again, we like order, and rotational symmetry gives us order. You can have a lot of fun with rotational symmetry, making designs that intrigue the mind.

Using nature as inspiration for design is probably the smartest thing you can do. Next time you are outdoors, look deeper into the things that you see around you and you will find a whole new world of creativity and design.
