Using Synchronized Text in QuarkXPress
Synchronized text in QuarkXPress works hand in hand with the multiple layouts function built into newer versions of the software, beginning with QuarkXPress 6. Multiple layouts allows you to save all related projects along with links and various files in one place. The disadvantage of this is that if the file gets corrupted, it could mess up lots of work. But this can be avoided by saving it in more than one place. If you have regular clients who ask you to design all their marketing materials from business cards to catalogs to brochure printing designs, then it is handy to be able to pull up all their material for reference.
The Problem
Often a loyal client will ask you to change the text in previous designs for all postcard, newsletter, and brochure printing layouts. Maybe they changed their tag line, phone number, or business address. It can be very tedious to go through each design project and type in the same text over and over. That is why the creators of QuarkXPress came up with synchronized text. Not only do you save time, but synchronized text helps eliminate typos that come from typing something over and over. Missing even one or two throughout a lengthy brochure or catalog can confuse customers and make you look unprofessional.
The Solution
The synchronized text function allows you to type in the changed text only once, and then QuarkXPress automatically changes all the brochure printing, poster, business card, and sign designs that you need changed. It will also make the change throughout a single layout when there are multiple instances in a single piece. To make words or phrases work in synchronized text, enter them in the synchronized text box by going to Window-Show Synchronized Text.
