How to Set Up a Step-and-Repeat Banner

Step-and-repeat banners create polished backdrops for red carpets, galas, and corporate events while helping highlight sponsors and branding in photos.

They are also straightforward to assemble when you follow the right process. This guide by PrintPlace explains how to set up and maintain a step-and-repeat banner for a smooth, professional presentation.

Parts of the Banner

Take a moment to look over all the parts before you start putting the banner together. All the parts are packed in a carrying case for easy storage. Take everything out of the case and check for the following:

  • The banner graphic with pole pockets at both the top and bottom.
  • Two base stands are included to keep the banner stable.
  • Two large telescopic vertical poles with screws.
  • Four medium telescopic horizontal poles, each with a removable thumb screw on one end.
  • The set also has two shorter horizontal poles.
  • A small L-shaped tool, provided to help with assembly.

Check that you have all the parts and make sure your setup area is level, flat, and tidy.

Setting Up Your Step and Repeat Banner

1. Set up the base and vertical poles

  • Secure the two large vertical poles to the base stands.
  • Use the L-shaped tool to tighten the screws on the base until they are secure.
  • Place both stands a few feet apart to match the banner’s width.

2. Assemble the horizontal support poles

  • Connect the two medium poles with one short pole to make the horizontal support.
  • Make sure both ends of the support pole have the thumb screw fittings.
  • Repeat this step with the other medium and short horizontal poles.

3. Insert the banner graphic

  • Slide the assembled horizontal poles through the pole pockets on the banner.
  • Extend the support poles so both ends stick out evenly on each side.
  • Take the thumb screws off each end of the horizontal poles.

4. Attach the banner to the frame

  • Lift the banner by holding both ends of the top horizontal pole.
  • Attach the ends of the top pole to the vertical poles with the thumb screws.
  • Extend the vertical poles until the banner is fully raised above the ground.

5. Secure and adjust the display

  • Lock the vertical poles at the height you want for your display.
  • Secure the ends of the bottom horizontal pole to the sides of the vertical poles using the thumb screws.
  • Check that the banner is tight, level, and lined up correctly.

Maintenance Tips for Your Step-and-Repeat Banner

  • Before you set up your banner, check that all stands, poles, and connectors are secure. Make sure the banner stays stable and does not tip over during your event.
  • Avoid putting the banner outside in harsh weather like direct sunlight, high heat, strong winds, or rain.
  • Roll the banner tightly and store it inside its carrying case after use. Avoid folding the graphic or placing heavy objects on top to prevent permanent creases, wrinkles, and damage.
  • Make sure you have all the banner parts before setting up and after taking it down. Check the frame, poles, and hardware often for any signs of wear or damage.
  • To clean the banner, gently wipe away dirt and stains with damp cloth. Dry the graphic completely with a hairdryer before you store it. Store the banner in a cool, dry place, away from too much humidity. This keeps the print looking good and helps the banner last longer.
